When I would find a good book I would not put it down. I would stay up until 3am reading and even then it was difficult to put it down. As an adult it has been a little more difficult to read (and especially until three in the morning). I have other priorities and reading is always on the back burner.

I do find that I make more time when it is a book that I just can’t turn down. Spiritual growth happens to be a big one I am unable to turn away from. I love to learn and growing is a great plus.

As a teacher I believe that knowledge is important and that without it we truly perish with a lack of it. When we know anything for certain we are not easily persuaded. We can’t have our minds changed because we know the truth and we know that the truth is not muddy.

On to the book review though. I have put together a list of five amazing spiritual growth books that have personally impacted my life. Each book has a different element of growth and can be read in a group or during spare time.

 Overcomer, by David Jeremiah

Publication Date: 2018

Number of Pages: 256

Format: hardcover, ebook, paperback (Spanish), audio and MP3 CD

Publisher: Thomas Nelson

Price: Ebook $9.99 Hardcover $14.99 Audio $21.99

Review: This book contains stories of people who overcame adversities from the past and present. It presents the reader with ways of becoming an Overcomer in different areas of our lives with a new focus in each chapter.

I love how the chapters truly cover so many adversities and how they explain the way of battling with truth! I also enjoy the shorter subsections that each chapter includes. Almost every page contains one or more scripture which is discussed with great detail by Dr. David Jeremiah.

Chapters include:

Overcomer, Overcoming Weakness with Strength, Overcoming Falsehood with Truth, Overcoming Evil with Good, Overcoming Anxiety with Peace, Overcoming Fear with Faith, Overcoming Confusion with Wisdom, Overcoming Temptation with Scripture, Overcoming Everything with Prayer, and Overcoming Death with Life.

This is the first book I’ve read that was written by Dr. David Jeremiah. I found that it was exactly what I needed when I needed it. I enjoyed the way Dr. Jeremiah shared information and how detailed he was throughout the book.

Why should you read it? Here is a quote that really stood out for me: “Because of Jesus, we can clothe ourselves and stand in joyful triumph. Just when it seemed humanity was overcome by death, Satan was overcome by Christ. Doubt was overcome by truth, and grief was overcome by joy.” Dr. Jeremiah is a wonderful writer and his way of explaining how to overcome adversities gives a new perspective that can be read by both young and old alike.

The Purpose-Driven Life by Rick Warren

Publication Date: 2013

Number of Pages: 368

Format: Paperback

Publisher: Zondervan

Price: $9.99 on sale

Review: I believe this is a great study resource and it is an easy read due to the structure of the book. It is set up to be read over the course of 40 days with an average of about 6 pages a day. The curriculum kit comes with video introductions, audio bible studies, and a great online community!

The title is answered along with some other questions, including, why am I alive and does my life matter? The book is broken up into five purposes, which include, You Were Planned For God’s Pleasure, You Were Formed for God’s Family, You Were Created to Become Like Christ, You Were Shaped for Serving God, and You Were Made for a Mission.

The chapters flow very well with the purpose and by the last day (or chapter) for the section questions are answered in a simple and understandable way.

Why should you read it? If you ever asked or thought of these questions then this is a great book to read. It is simple because of the layout and is very reasonably priced (when I got the book it was on sale for $9.99). I also enjoy all the companion products that go with this book.

Goliath Must Fall by Louie Giglio

Publication Date: 2017

Number of Pages: 224

Format: Paperback, study guide, and companion DVD

Publisher: Thomas Nelson

Price: $11.49

Review: Now the story of Goliath was already very inspiring. A young boy with a slingshot defeats a giant that no other could stand against. This book reminds us who we must look to and trust. The examples that are given to battle our own giants are second to none!

I appreciate that Louie Giglio shares his own experiences and how he really connects with his readers (a huge inspiration of mine). The book is separated in two sections with chapters 1-5 in the first section and 6-9 in the second.

Chapters include: Bigger Than Your Giant, Dead but Still Deadly, Fear Must Fall, Rejection Must Fall, Comfort Must Fall, Anger Must Fall, Addiction Must Fall, A Table in the Presence, and Fuel For the Fight.

Why should you read it? With the stories and description this book is an amazing help even if your giants have been defeated. It helps keep old giants away and is very relatable.

Lies Women Believe by Nancy DeMoss

Publication Date: 2018

Number of Pages: 304

Format: Hardcover

Publisher: Moody Publishers

Price: $13.99

Review: Nancy DeMoss has written such a valuable book! This book goes over the lies women believe about themselves, sin, marriage, emotions, and circumstances. It gives instances in each area that almost any women can relate to in some way.

The chapters were longer than the other books but so worth the read! Mrs. DeMoss had written the book with chapters in three sections: Foundations, Lies Women Believe, and Walking in the Truth. Safe to say majority of the chapters were in section two.

She uses scripture, tables and fun diary entries that are written in the perspective of Eve. I love being able to read this and to get a deeper understanding of what it must have been like being Eve.

Why should you read it? As a woman I believe it is very important to be able to point out the truth and the lies. This book is encouraging and a great learning tool alone or with its study guide. It closes with how to counter lies with truth and was very well written.

This Is the Day by Tim Tebow

Publication Date: 2018

Number of Pages: 224

Format: Hardcover, Ebook, Audio CD

Publisher: Waterbrook

Price: $16.99

Review: I actually came upon this book by chance and really loved the message. Tim Tebow does an excellent job of encouraging his readers to love for God. He shows that he follows his own advice by taking action and going through with his dreams.

It is a very intimate read due to all the personal experiences, both good and bad, that he shares. I also like that he shares that he is not simply his occupation or what others say he is. He is a child of God and will live for that purpose. Using his experiences he is able to encourage readers to take the next step in their walk with Christ and explains how to do so in twelve easy to read chapters.

Chapters include: Say “I Love You”, Get in the Game, Leave the Past Behind, Listen to the Right Voice, Believe in What Really Matters, Say Yes, Put in the Work, Open Your Eyes, Live With Open Hands, Flip the Script, Go Back to the Well, and Make it Count.

Why should you read it? Using scripture, Tim Tebow is able to portray that God has a plan for us and that it is not just for the future but for the now. I also enjoyed the intimate nature of this book with it being by a sports star. After reading I truly had a different perspective of Mr. Tebow.

Thank you for reading such a long post! Hopefully one or all of these books provides you what you are looking for. Are there any other books that I didn’t include that would be on your list? Have you read any of the above and have an opinion about the book?
